BEETHOVEN Overture, The Creatures of Prometheus
TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1
SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2
Enthralling, passionate, rapturous, Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto is a wild Cossack-ride through virtuoso territory that leaves audiences breathless in its wake. Incredibly, when Tchaikovsky first showed it to his mentor Nikolay Rubinstein, he was told that only 'two or three pages' were worth preserving! Meanwhile, Sibelius reportedly held that his music was as 'pure cold water' as opposed to the 'manufactured cocktails' of some other composers. Fittingly, Sibelius found inspiration for his Second Symphony while going on long walks, communing with nature and immersing himself in the rugged landscapes of Northern Finland.
