Bedford Sinfonia opens its 2022/23 season with a performance at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedford of Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, composed in 1782 and known as the Haffner after having been commissioned by the Haffners, a prominent Salzburg family. This is followed by Shostakovich’s second Piano Concerto, written as a showcase for his 19-year-old son, Maxim. It will be performed on this occasion by Paul Searle-Barnes, an international soloist, and Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedford. The programme ends with Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 in E flat major, the seventh of his twelve London symphonies, written in 1793 in Vienna in anticipation of his second trip to London.
