BEETHOVEN Overture, The Ruins of Athens
DVOŘÁK Cello Concerto
MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 3
Gabriele Schwabe is the winner of the prestigious 2009 Pierre Fournier Award, and this concert marks his début concerto appearance with the Philharmonia. He performs Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, a work full of deep feeling and understanding of the cello’s unique soundworld. Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony follows: a work inspired by a three-week walking tour the composer took when he was 20. Echoes of Scottish folksongs and Celtic harps abound as well as more abstract inspirations; after visiting Holyrood Palace, Mendelssohn wrote to his family, “Everything around is broken and mouldering, and the bright sky shines in. I believe I found there today the beginning of my Scottish Symphony.”
This concert is generously supported by the Pierre Fournier Award.
